Vital records are the official records of the events of a person’s civil life in the United States: birth, marriage, divorce, and death. Unlike many countries, the US does not have a national vital registry: each state issues them through its Office of Vital Statistics/Records, with its own forms, official fees, timing and eligibility rules — generally, only the holder and his or her immediate family can request a certified copy. The certified copy is the only version with legal value: it bears the seal and signature of the issuing office, and is the one required by consulates, foreign registries, courts and insurance companies. To use it outside the US, the document usually also requires an apostille from the same state that issued it, and in many destinations a certified translation.
