Marriage record registration before the county — your wedding, officially filed

The marriage record registration is the step that turns your ceremony into an official marriage before the state. After the “I do”, the signed license must go back to the county Clerk of Court to be filed — and only then do certified copies of the certificate exist. We handle that closing: we return the license on time, follow the filing through and hand you your certificate, ready to apostille.

Let us start at the beginning

What is marriage record registration?

Many couples believe the ceremony settles everything. However, without marriage record registration before the county, there is no official proof — and no copies.

Marriage record registration is the official filing of your wedding in the county where it took place. It is ordered by Chapter 741 of the Florida Statutes. After the ceremony, the officiant completes the certificate on the license and returns it to the Clerk of Court within the next ten days. The county then files the marriage in its vital records.

That filing is the key piece. From it come the certified copies of the marriage certificate — the document your bank, your consulate or the civil registry of your country will ask for. In other words, the ceremony creates the bond, but the filing makes it provable. That is why we leave nothing to chance here: we handle the step and confirm to you when your marriage is on record.

With its legal basis, point by point

Marriage record registration, step by step

This is what the law demands for marriage record registration — and what we resolve at each point. Has your wedding already happened, did you marry abroad or did you lose the license? Message us on WhatsApp: there is almost always a solution.

A signed and certified license

After the ceremony, the officiant completes the certificate on the marriage license. Moreover, they check that it is valid and error-free before sending it in.

F.S. §741.08

Return to the county within 10 days

The law sets a ten-day deadline to return the signed license to the Clerk of Court that issued it. We deliver it on time — you will not miss that window.

F.S. §741.08

Filing in the county register

The Clerk of Court files the marriage in its vital records. From that moment, your wedding is an official fact and can be looked up with the state of Florida.

F.S. §741.09

Issuance of certified copies

Once filed, the county issues the certified copies of the marriage certificate. Those are the ones that count before banks, consulates and civil registries.

County vital record

Did you marry outside Florida?

If your marriage took place in another state or country, we also help you obtain the certificate from the right registry and prepare it for use here or abroad.

Depending on jurisdiction

Apostille and translation for abroad

Is the certificate going to another country? After the filing we handle the Hague Apostille and the translation. It is therefore ready to present there.

Hague Convention

Record registration or copies of the record? These are two different moments. Registration means filing a marriage that has just been celebrated — that is what this page is about. If your marriage is already filed and you only need more official copies, by contrast, that is handled on our marriage certificate page. We solve both for you; only the starting point changes.

We understand you

Do any of these situations sound familiar?

If you came here looking for how to register your marriage, you are probably facing one of these situations. All of them have a way out — and several are resolved faster than you think.

“We married and I do not know if it was filed”

The ceremony happened, but nobody confirmed the filing. Without that record, the marriage is not official and you cannot request copies of the certificate.

“The deadline to return the license is running out”

The law gives ten days to return the signed license. However, between the honeymoon and the trip home, that window slips by easily.

“We married abroad and I need the certificate here”

Your wedding took place in another state or country. Now you are asked for the filed certificate, and you do not know which office to approach or how to bring it over.

“I need the certificate for my country”

The civil registry of your country requires the certificate with an apostille and, sometimes, a translation. That is why the filing and the whole chain must be done properly.

“I lost or damaged the license before filing it”

The license was misplaced or damaged before going back to the county. There are ways to fix it — but it pays to act quickly and with good guidance.

“I do not understand the county process in English”

The Clerk forms and instructions are in English and full of technical language. Moreover, one wrong detail delays the entire filing.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about marriage record registration

Direct answers — the same ones we would give you at the office.

It is the official filing of your wedding in the county where it took place. After the ceremony, the officiant completes the certificate on the license and returns it to the Clerk of Court within ten days. The county then records the marriage in its vital records and, from that point on, it can issue certified copies of the certificate.

Because without registration there is no official proof and no copies of the certificate. The ceremony creates the bond, but the filing is what makes it provable before banks, consulates and civil registries. An unregistered marriage can therefore cause trouble exactly when you most need to prove it.

Florida law gives ten days after the ceremony for the officiant to return the signed license to the issuing Clerk. It is a short window and easy to overlook between the trip and the celebration. That is why we take care of the delivery within the deadline and hand you the receipt.

The officiant who performed the wedding is responsible for completing the certificate and returning the license to the county. When our founder officiates the ceremony, that closing step is covered from start to finish. Did someone else marry you and skip it? Then we can also help set the filing back on track.

It is checked with the Clerk of Court of the county where the wedding took place. We make that enquiry for you and confirm in writing whether the marriage is on record. Moreover, if it is not filed yet, we tell you exactly which step is missing to complete it.

A marriage is filed where it was celebrated; it does not move to Florida. However, if you married in another state or country, we help you obtain the certificate from the correct issuing registry. We then prepare it — with apostille and translation if needed — for use here or back home.

Once the county records the marriage. From that moment, the registry issues the certified copies of the certificate with its official seal. We request as many as you need and, if you wish, we coordinate the apostille as well. You therefore receive everything in a single process.

Usually yes. For the certificate to take effect abroad, the civil registry of your country normally asks for the Hague Apostille from the Florida Department of State and, depending on the case, a translation. That is why we handle the full chain after registration, ready to file there.

Not everything is lost. Depending on the case, there are routes before the county to correct or replace the license and complete the filing. The important thing is to act quickly. Tell us what happened and we will review your situation to guide the best path.

Yes, exactly the same. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Florida since 2015 and across the United States since the Obergefell ruling. The filing, the certificate and the certified copies follow the same process. We also have a dedicated page with full information.

Yes. Even if months or years have passed, we can help verify the filing, obtain the certificate or prepare the apostille for a new use. Tell us when and where you married, and we will review which document you need and how to get it without you standing in line.

Message us on WhatsApp with the date and place of the wedding and what you need. We then send you the missing step and the total cost in writing — registration, copies, apostille or translation, with no surprise charges.
